From the supplier: Casio Inc. was able to dispose of its surplus products in a productive manner through an agreement with the barter company Active International Inc. Under this deal, Active buys excess Casio watches, calculators and musical keyboards at wholesale price and offers trade credits to Casio as payment. The credits are then used by Casio to obtain advertising time or space which is guaranteed by Active. As stipulated in a contract, Active is required to provide the appropriate advertising time or space requested by Casio and to sell the excess products only at agreed-upon markets. As a result of this barter agreement, Casio has already bartered surplus products worth $25 million since 1989. Aside from relinquishing the oversupply, Casio has also used barter to finance advertising for its first-line products and to remarket its merchandise in foreign countries. Guidelines for bartering are discussed.
